Maltese Eye Stain - A Few Causes to Know About

Maltese Eye Stain - A Few Causes to Know About

If you own a Maltese, more than likely you worry about keeping them looking and feeling great, whether you show them at dog shows or they are just the family pet.

Maltese eye stain is actually a very common problem, and since these dogs are so light in color, the dog tear stains are very evident.

It is very important that you understand that various possible causes of Maltese tear stains so that you know how to prevent these problems and so that you can help treat them as well.

The following are a few of the reasons that your dog may have Maltese eye stain and some ways that you can help deal with the problem.

One of the most common causes for Maltese eye stain is actually having tear ducts that are clogged. It is very common for smaller dogs to have very shallow tear ducts, which may easily become clogged, and some small dogs actually have tear ducts that never open as they should. These leads to tearing, which then causes dog tear staining. If you think your Maltese may have this problem, then you may want to take them to the vet. The vet can do surgery to open ducts that did not open properly or they can actually flush out the ducts of your dog as well.

Believe it or not, another cause of Maltese eye stain is actually allergies. Just as you can develop allergies that lead to tearing, your dog can develop allergies as well. In some cases the allergy may be to a type of food, a certain shampoo, or even due to getting hair or eyelashes in their eyes. This can cause Maltese dog eye stain, and you may have to take the time to try and figure out if there is something your dog is around or something in their diet that is causing this dog tear staining problem.

Ear infections are another very common cause of Maltese eye stain. When your dog gets an ear infection, they may suffer quite a bit of pain as well as dealing with tear staining as well. If you want to prevent ear infections that can cause Maltese eye stain, one thing you can do is to make sure that you wash the ears of your dog very well, making sure to dry them well too. In the event that your dog does get an ear infection, your vet can prescribe a good antibiotic, which can help to cure the ear infection and help prevent the Maltese tear stains as well.

A variety of other causes of Maltese eye stain may include, flees, a yeast infection, and in some cases even the type of water that your Maltese regularly drinks.
